Helium Mobile Hotspot FAQ

What is a Helium Mobile hotspot?

It is simply a router that connects mobile (cell) phones to their carrier networks, using existing internet resources that you already have in your store.

Why would I want to host a Helium Mobile hotspot in my store?

It has the following benefits to your store and its patrons:

Do I need to tell customers my shop has a Helium Mobile hotspot?

No. Phones with compatible carriers connect automatically—no action needed. You can offer “free Wi-Fi” through the hotspot if desired, but we don’t always recommend it (see next question).

I don’t share my Wi-Fi password to avoid issues with TVs, registers, etc. Can the hotspot provide a safe public connection?

Yes, it can create an open Wi-Fi network with a login page, but we usuallydon’t recommend it because:

  • You’re not paid for data used.
  • You don’t get customer info from the login page.
  • Login pages frustrate users and can block texts or apps.
Will the hotspot put my store’s devices (registers, computers) at risk?

Low risk. All phone traffic is routed securely through a VPN tunnel to the carrier’s network. For extra safety, we can place it on a separate network (VLAN).

Do users need a password to connect?

No. It uses Passpoint 2.0—a facy way of saying phones connect automatically using their SIM card, just like switching cell towers.

Can everyone connect to the Helium Mobile hotspot?

Only if Public WiFi is enabled. By default, we do not set this up unless you really want this option. If you ever should change your mind, we can turn it on or off remotely, just call Handy IT at 513.549.3535

Is having a Helium Hotsopt in my business "environmentally friendly?"

Absolutely! The pennies per day it costs to run saves dollars per day in various environmental costs:

  • Phone batteries don't burn up as fast transmitting to distant towers and need charged less often.
  • Lower radio frequency exposure levels benefit everyone in your shop!
  • Cell sites use less electricity transmitting to distant or hard-to-reach phones.
Do phones need Wi-Fi turned on to use the hotspot?

Usually not. Connection happens automatically. Some Androids with certain carriers may need to select the network before their phone connects.

What is the name of the WiFi network on the Helium Mobile hotspot?

The name will appear as "Helium," a secure AP. Depending on the phone's particular carrier, it may appear as "AT&T Passpoint" or another carrier-specific identifier. If you chose to offer open WiFi, the open network will also appear as "Helium Free WiFi"

Will the Helium Mobile hotspot interfere with my existing Wi-Fi?

No. It auto-selects the least crowded Wi-Fi channel.

Will it slow down my Point-of-Sale systems or wired devices?

No. But if your internet is slow, we may need to upgrade it or limit the hotspot’s speed. Call us—we can adjust settings or help increase your ISP speed at no cost to you.

Is user data safe? Can I see who’s using it?

Yes—data is encrypted via the phone’s SIM, just like on regular cell networks. You get general usage stats (number of devices connected, amount of data used), but no personal info like names or numbers.

Will phone calls drop when people enter or leave my store?

No. Passpoint 2.0 ensures smooth handoffs. If issues occur, call us—we have tools to fix it.

Can I block certain customers from using the hotspot?

No. Connection is controlled by the phone and carrier. Some Android users can disable auto-connect; iPhones usually cannot.

Will my ISP ban me for hosting this?

No. But if you have a data cap, it could be an issue. We will assist in upgrading your ISP plan at no cost if needed.

Am I breaking any laws or carrier rules?

No. Carriers pay Helium to use your hotspot as network offload. You’re just using your paid internet—perfectly legal.

No one seems to be connecting. What’s wrong?

After 1–2 weeks, carriers decide whether to route users to your hotspot. Only Helium Mobile and Google Fi users can connect at first. If no carriers adopt it, we’ll troubleshoot or remove it and cover any expenses for ISP upgrades, if made.

Some customers can’t connect—what’s going on?

Only users from adopted carriers can connect. There’s also a limit of 100 simultaneous users. You’ll see which carriers are active in your monthly report. Also, very old phones may not support Passpoint 2.0 connections.

Does Handy IT offer other IT services?

Yes! We provide network support, VoIP, PoS systems, backup internet, and power solutions. Call 513.549.3535 to learn more.

Do customers get free data or use Wi-Fi calling when connected to the Helium Mobile hotspot?

No. They’re charged normally by their carrier. Unlimited plans stay unlimited.

What happens if the internet or power goes out?

Phones switch back to cellular—if signal is weak indoors, calls/data may drop. We offer backup internet and power solutions to prevent this.

When and how do I get paid?

You’re usually paid around the 2nd week of each month for the previous Calendar month’s usage. Options include check or PayPal. Payouts are based on actual earnings of the hotspot, split per your agreement, and paid to you by Handy IT.

What if the hotspot earns nothing? Do I owe you?

No—you never owe us. If it doesn’t start to earn after 2 weeks, we’ll try to fix it. If it fails due to location, either party can end the agreement. We’ll remove equipment and cover any ISP upgrades you were charged for, if applicable.

How much can I earn?

It depends on traffic, carriers, and location. Earnings vary monthly. We only place hotspots where we believe they’ll pay off. Handy IT began this program in November 2025 and is still collecting earnings data—we’re in it to win together.
